How To: Install the C-4491 CCI Access Point at a FasCard/FLEX Location

Overview

This guide will provide detailed instructions on how to install a C-4491 CAP (the Mikrotik cAP XL) in a FasCard or FLEX location, whether for newly established setups or replacing legacy Satellite Access Points (SAPs) in tandem with the C-1491-V2 Mikrotik hAP ax³ SAT throughout.

When coupled with the SAT, the CAP would replace the need of having multiple Satellite Access Points (SAPs) in a single location.

Requirements

  • C-1491-V2 Mikrotik hAP ax³ SAT mounted and installed prior to completing mounting and power-up of the CAP.

  • C-4491 Mikrotik cAP XL

  • C-0555 Gigabit PoE Adapter with Power Supply.

  • C-0181 100' Cat5e Cable

    • 100' is the suggested maximum cable length for SAT and CAP use. Latency/bandwidth issues may become a factor if connecting cable is over 100'.

Tools

  • Phillips Screwdriver

  • (Optional) Power Drill or Impact Driver

  • (Optional) Any additional mounting hardware at the discretion of the installer.

Installation

When installing a SAT and CAP(s) at a location keep in mind that nearly every building, facility, layout, store configuration, etc. may be dramatically different from one another. The following is our recommended set of steps compatible for the greater majority of locations. Any changes made in-person are at the discretion of the installer and/or any authorized personnel on-site.

  1. Identify and locate any ideal mounting areas away from the primary SAT where the CAP can optimally perform the following:

    1. Broadcast a wireless signal in an open area with little-to-no interference.

    2. Reach a wide range of readers in the same open area. Ceilings/tiles, centered bulkheads or pillars are good mounting examples.

      1. One example of positioning an CAP can be where any second, third, or fourth legacy Satellite Access Point (SAP) would be located and removed, when installing at an existing location.

  2. Identify and locate an appropriate power outlet for the included CAP PoE Adapter that the SAT Port # ethernet cable that can bridge a connection between the SAT and the CAP can reach.

  3. When the right place is chosen, carefully feed any necessary cabling (e.g. a 100' 22-24AWG Cat5e/Cat6 ethernet cable) that will connect to the 'PoE out' port of the PoE adapter and the 'ETH 1 PoE in' port in the CAP, securing any cabling so as to not have hanging or draping cables.

    1. If a new SAT and CAP Install Kit was provided, the appropriate cables and PoE adapter should be included and utilized.

  4. Mount and wire the included mounting plate to the selected location in one of the following ways*, using the C-0181 100' Cat5e ethernet cable to connect to the Ether 1 PoE port in the CAP:

  1. Connect the other end of the C-0181 100' Cat5e ethernet cable into the 'PoE out' port of included PoE adapter.

  2. Connect the ethernet cable from the data end of the PoE adapter into either Ports 4 or 5 in the SAT, or both, if two or more CAPs are being installed.

  3. Connect the power barrel connector to the included PoE power adapter.

  4. Plug in the power adapter. The light on the PoE adapter will illuminate when the adapter is on.

Multiple CAPs

If installing more than one CAP, you may connect two (2) CAPs to the same PoE line in a daisy-chain fashion, allowing the pair of CAPs to be powered by a single PoE adapter.

CAP Use Post-Installation

  • When the CAP is mounted and powered, if not set up already, add the CAP information to the FasCard Admin Site from the Locations page when selecting its appropriate Satellite.

    • (Optional) Set affinity to the CAP for any FasCard/FLEX readers within closer range to the CAP than the SAT.

      • Once affinity is set at the CAP level, select each individual machine under the Machines tab, select the CAP as affinity in the setup dropdown per machine, and click Save.

Once CAP is online, you can view which wireless readers have migrated to the CAP over time, or which wireless readers switch to the CAP once affinity is set up, under the System Maintenance tab.
