How-to create a VPN connection in Windows 7

Purpose

This guide will show you how to setup a VPN connection to your laundromat on a Windows 7 device.

Create the VPN

  1. Open the Control Panel on Windows 7 by clicking on Start and then 'Control Panel'

  2. Please click on 'Network and Internet'. Double click to open it.

  3. Next, click on 'Network and Sharing Center' as shown in the image

  4. Now, please click on 'Set up a new connection or Network'

  5. On the next screen (Choose the Connection Type) Click on 'Connect to a workplace' then click 'Next'

  6. If asked to use an existing connection select 'No, create a new connection'. Now click 'Use my Internet connection (VPN)'

  7. Now, enter the server information. In the text box labeled 'Internet address' type the IP address provided in the Remote Connection email. This is the Static IP address of your laundromat.
    In the text box labeled 'Destination name' give it a name such as your store name. This is the name of the connection, and will show up in the 'Connect to a network' screen when we're done.
    Make sure that the checkbox labeled 'Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later' is checked!
    You can also put a check at 'allow other people to use this connection'
    Then click the 'Next' button.

  8. Enter your username and password that was sent to you in the Remote Connection email & click create.
    Optionally, click 'Remember this Password' to save your password as part of the connection.
    Click 'Create'

  9. The Connection is almost ready to use, click 'close'

  10. Click on the Network icon in the Tray (As shown on the picture below)

  11. Click on the connection and click 'connect', On the login screen click on 'properties'

  12. Confirm that the server IP address is correct and click onto the 'Options' tab

  13. After clicking on the Options tab - uncheck'Include Windows logon domain' if checked. Now click on the 'Security' tab

  14. After clicking on the Security tab. Change the Type of VPN: to 'Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)' from the the drop down menu.
    Then change the Data encryption: to 'Optional encryption (connect even if no encryption)' from the drop down menu.

  15. Now based on what kind of firewall you have at your store (Mikrotik, D-Link, Astaro, or PIX) you will determine what protocols you use.
    - CISCO PIX then you want to ONLY check 'Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol' and Uncheck all others
    - MikrotikD-Link or Astaro then you want to ONLY check 'Microsoft CHAP Version 2' and Uncheck all others

  16. Now click on the 'Networking' tab. Select 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' then click 'Properties'

  17. From here you will want to click on the 'Advanced..' button.

  18. Now you want to UNCHECK the 'Use default gateway on remote network' setting. Then Just keep clicking 'OK' till your out of all the properties.

  19. Last you will need to click on the Network icon in the Tray (As shown on the picture below)
    For now on when you need to connect or disconnect to your store's VPN connection you will do it from network icon in the tray.
    To connect for your first time please choose your newly created VPN and click 'Connect'
    You are now connected to your LaundryCard system!

  20. Once you have connected to the store, launch your internet browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer).
    Type the following into the address bar and press 'Enter': http://10.0.0.101/CCI_0/MOption.asp?CardNumber=99
    It is recommended you add this as a bookmark for future use.
    The browser will load a manager start page, from here you may access all of your manager functions.
