Overview

This document describes the physical process of installing a FasCard system.  Including install of FasCard readers and Satellite Access Points (SAP).

On this Page

The Satellite Access Point or SAP is a bridge between the FasCard readers and the internet.  The SAP has an Ethernet port that connects to the locations internet connection and a wireless antenna that communicates with the FasCard readers.  The SAP is more than a wireless access point in that it provides valuable location status information to the FasCard administration site.  Each location requires one SAP for every 50-60 FasCard readers and multiple SAP's can be used to extend the wireless coverage area or provide redundancy.  The wireless range of a SAP is approximately 90 feet providing coverage to 180 foot diameter surrounding the SAP.  While the wireless signal will operate through walls and objects, signal strength may be degraded and interference from sources generating strong electromagnetic fields is possible.

The SAP can be powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet) device which eliminates the need to install a power source at the install site.  Power for the SAP is delivered through the Cat5 cable that connects the device to the local internet connection by way of the POE adapter utilized during installation.  SAP's can be wall or ceiling mounted with the mounting hardware provided and should be installed in a central location providing even coverage to all FasCard readers.

Important Information About the Satellite Device

The FasCard satellite (Mikrotik 951G-2HnD) device can accept power through its power jack or through the first Ethernet port:

  • The DC power jack accepts 8-30V DC.
    • Note: The DC power accepts a 5.5mm outside diameter, 2mm inside diameter, female, pin positive plug.
  • The first Ethernet port accepts passive Power over Ethernet (PoE) 8-30V DC.
    • Note: The 951G-2HnD satellite does not support PoE+ or PoE++ which typically supplies 48V DC.
  • Attempting to power a 951G-2HnD satellite with anything over its maximum rated acceptable input voltage of 30V DC may harm the device.
  • Under maximum load, the power consumption of this device is 7W.

Assumptions

This document assumes the following:

  • The user is proficient in the use of basic hand and power tools.
  • The user has a basic understanding of the host machines being modified.
  • The user understands that CCI takes no responsibility to any damage that may occur to equipment during installation procedure.
  • The user has full access to equipment and facilities where FasCard equipment is to be installed.
  • The install location has a full time internet connection with a router or modem with enough available Ethernet ports to service the number of SAP's being installed
  • The install location as a 120vac outlet for every SAP being installed within 15 feet of the internet connection.
This procedure assumes that all required FasCard applications including ACH forms, Account application and equipment survey forms have been completed and turned into CCI.  Failure to complete the configuration procedure will prevent the FasCard equipment from operating properly.  Contact CCI to ensure that this step has been completed prior to installing product.

Required Hardware

Part IDDescription

Recommended Tools

  • Powered Drill
  • 1-3/4" Hole Saw bit

NOTE

It's recommended that you check the packing slips and confirm that all equipment ordered has been received.  If any items are missing or incorrect contact your reseller.

Ceiling Mount Instructions

Step 1 - Open Satellite Enclosure

C-1492

  1. Open the enclosure by pushing three locks on the diameter.

  2. Remove the parts from inside.

  3. Remove the Plastic Screw.

Step 2 - Mount Main Housing
  1. Cut a circular hole of diameter 1-3/4" at the desired mounting location.
  2. Insert Plastic Screw from topside of ceiling panel/drywall.
  3. Connect the Plastic Screw and the Body.
Step 3 - Pass Cable and Install Mounting Bracket
  1. Pass the Cat5 cable through the mounting hole once the main housing is installed.
    1. The opposite end of this cable connects to the POE Adapter. FasCard System Installation (with POE)
  2. Insert the mounting bracket and rotate to lock the bayonet lock in place.

Step 4 - Attach Satellite Access Point to Mounting Bracket

C-1491

  1. Attach the C-1491 Satellite Access Point to the Mounting bracket by simple Push and Lock. Device feet shall match exactly to the sockets in the Mounting Bracket.
  2. Connect the Cat5 cable to the PoE port 1 and re-attach the cover removed in Step 1.

Wall Mount Instructions

Step 1 - Open Satellite Enclosure

C-1492

  1. Open the enclosure by pushing three locks on the diameter.

  2. Remove the parts from inside.

  3. Remove the Plastic Screw.

Step 2 - Mount Main Housing
  1. Use four screws and wall plugs to mount the body directly on the wall. Do not use the Plastic Screw.
  2. There are three troughs designed for cable access. The center hole is designed for cable access.
  3. Pass the Cat5 cable through the appropriate trough and out through the center hole.
    1. The opposite end of this cable connects to the POE Adapter. FasCard System Installation (with POE)

Step 3 - Install Mounting Bracket

Satellite Installment Instructions

  1. Survey facility for an appropriate SAP installation location
    1. The SAP should be located in the center of the area in which the FasCard readers are to be located.  The wireless range of the devices is approximately 90 feet, properly placing a SAP can cover 180 foot diameter area.
    2. The SAP can be either ceiling mounted or wall mounted using the included mounting tabs.
    3. The SAP comes with a 100' Cat5 Ethernet cable, this cable will connect the SAP to the locations internet connection.  Confirm that 100' will be sufficient to reach the mounting site to the internet connection.

      • NOTE:  The Cat5 Ethernet cable should be no longer than 100'.  If longer than 100', there could be latency, or bandwidth reduction preventing a clear internet connection.
    4. The path in which the Cat5 cable is to be run should be free of hazards that may sever or damage the cable, avoiding high frequency devices such as lighting ballasts, microwaves, cordless phones or neon lighting is also recommended
    5. If installing multiple SAP's, when possible choose mounting sites where all SAP's are in range of all FasCard readers.  This will provide redundancy to the readers in the event that an SAP goes offline.
  2. Mount the SAP
    1. The SAP has multiple mounting options, follow the Fascard Satellite Access Point Install / Mounting Guide for details
  3. Connect the C-0181 100' Cat5 cable to Port 1 / POE on the SAP.

  4. Run the opposite end of the C-0181 Cat5 cable from the SAP to the local internet connection in the building.
    1. Use cable ties to secure cabling to solid structures along cable pathway, stay clear of any objects that may cause harm to the cable.
  5. Connect the provided C-0177 15' Cat5 cable to the customer supplied internet device and the other end into the "Data In" port of the C-5605 PoE adapter.

This might be a router or a 'Modem', this device must provide DHCP service.  Although most routers and modems today do, you may need to contact a local networking professional to confirm

  6. Connect the 100' home run from the SAP into the "Data & Power Out" port of the PoE.

    Wiring Example:

  7. Plug the C-5605 PoE injector into the 120vac outlet.
  8. The SAP will boot up and try and establish connection to the Internet and the FasCard servers, this takes about 2 minutes.
  9. Install the FasCard readers on to the host equipment
    1. Follow the instruction as provided for the appropriate installation guide for the type of equipment you are installing.
  10. Address the FasCard Reader
    1. See How to program address on FasCard Reader

  11. Test the machine
    1. Be sure to test the machine with coins and cards to confirm successful operation
