Overview

This page is intended to guide the user through:

  • Replacing a Tripp-Lite Uninterruptable Power Supply and its Components.
  • How to perform a Self-Test without the software
  • Max Load/Output Load Level  
  • Indicator Light Legend

SMARTPRO500 Tripp-Lite UPS devices have an average protection life of 3-5 years with daily use.  If the battery light is constantly orange/red, or if the device remains off following a power outage, replacing the internal cells is recommended.

Replacing The Entire Tripp-Lite UPS

Disconnect any electrical device from power before performing any work on the device. It is recommended that the instructions contained herein be performed by individuals who are qualified to perform these tasks. Card Concepts Inc. takes no responsibility for any damage that may occur to target equipment. CCI Technical Support recommends using all appropriate safety equipment (such as hand and eye protection) during execution of the instructions below.

STOP!

Before replacing this device, verify that the "surge" outlet provides power. If so, only the rechargeable battery inside the device needs to be replaced.

Step 1 - Shutting Down The Computer

  1. Refer to LaundryCard: Proper Reboot and Shutdown Procedures. Shutdown the computer in the X-Changer that requires the replacement hardware according the the instructions contained therein.

Step 2 - Locating The Tripp-Lite And Verifying Hardware Configuration

  1. Locate the Tripp-Lite UPS (highlighted in red, alternate configurations shown side by side).
    1. Some X-Changer cabinets (shown on left, below) contain multiple Tripp-Lite devices, but will only contain one Tripp-Lite UPS (also known as a battery backup, outlined here in red).

  2. Locate the power button on the front of the Tripp-Lite UPS.
    1. If the status lights above the power button are lit green, hold down the power button (circled in red) until the unit powers off.

Step 3 - Removing The Tripp-Lite UPS From The Mounting Rack

CCI Technical Support recommends taking a picture or labeling the cables before unplugging and remove the units. This is extremely important because different outlets in the Tripp-Lite UPS provide different functionality.

There may be two versions of X-Changer cabinets with slightly different metal framing. 

  • The V2A Cabinet metal framing which holds all of the equipment sits closer to the cabinet door.  This limited space requires removing the control head, surge protectors (Or EPC Unit), and the Tripp-Lite battery, and tilting the units to remove them in order to not hit the hinge of the cabinet door. 
  • The V2B Cabinet metal framing sits an inch further to the right not requiring tilting during removal or the removal of the other units.

Removing the Control Head

  1. Working in the direction from top to bottom, make note of all locations of cables and then unplug all cables from the Control Head.  (Take a picture of the cabling if necessary.)
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the Control Head.
  3. Remove the four screws from the Control Head unit. (Front side of the cabinet as seen below.)
  4. Pull the Control Head unit out of the cabinet, tilting at an angle as necessary not to hit the cabinet door hinge.

Removing The Tripp-Lite Surge Protectors/EPC Device

  1. Make note of the locations of all the cabling on the Tripp-Lite surge protectors/EPC Device, again taking a picture if necessary (Surge Protectors - Left picture below/ EPC Device - Right Picture below).
  2. Unplug all of the cables from the Tripp-Lite surge protectors (Left picture below)/EPC Device (Right picture below).
  3. Remove the 8 screws from Tripp-Lite Surge protectors, the top two devices above the Tripp-Lite battery (Left picture below) ).  IF EPC is used (Right picture below), there will only be 4 screws to remove.
  4. Pull out the surge protectors (Or EPC Unit) from the cabinet.  You may need to tilt at an angle to remove the units from the cabinet.

Removing The Tripp-Lite Battery unit

  1. Make note of the Tripp-Lite battery cabling locations. 
  2. Unplug the cables.

  3. Locate and remove the four mounting screws attaching the Tripp-Lite UPS to the mounting rack (arrows pointing to them below).
  4. Set screws aside for mounting the replacement unit.
  5. Tilt the battery unit at an angle in order to remove it from the cabinet.

  1. Locate and remove the four mounting screws attaching the Tripp-Lite UPS to the mounting rack (arrows pointing to them below).
  2. Set screws aside for mounting the replacement unit.
  3. Carefully pull the Tripp-Lite UPS unit forward until it is free of the mounting rack.

Installing The Tripp-Lite Battery unit

  1. Starting from the bottom of the cabinet to the top, carefully insert the Tripp-Lite UPS unit into the cabinet, slightly tilting the unit to clear the metal frame.
  2. Using the Phillips head screw driver, mount the unit to the rack using the screws previously set aside.
  3. Reconnect the cables that were previously disconnected, or wait until all units are reinstalled and then reconnect all of the cables.

Installing the Tripp-Lite Surge Protectors/EPC Device

  1. Reinstall each of the Tripp-Lite surge protectors (Or EPC Unit) after installing the Tripp-Lite battery.
  2. Using the Phillips screw driver, mount the surge protectors to the rack using the screws previously set aside for the units.
  3. Reconnect the cables to the surge protectors, (Or EPC Unit) or wait until all units are reinstalled.

Installing The Control Head

  1. Reinstall the Control Head.
  2. Using the Phillips screw driver, mount the Control Head to the rack using the screws previously set aside for the unit.
  3. Reconnect the power cable to the Control Head, and the rest of the cables to the battery and surge protectors, if not done previously.

  1. Carefully insert the Tripp-Lite UPS unit into the cabinet until it is seated in the mounting rack.  Again, tilting may be necessary.
  2. Using a Phillips head screw driver, mount the screws to attach the Tripp-Lite UPS to the mounting rack (marked with arrows below).

Reconnect all of the cables to each unit, if not done previously.  Refer to the Tripp-Lite UPS Battery Setup and Reference to view the cabling diagrams for each cabinet.

Step 5 - Powering On The Tripp-Lite Battery

  1. Press and hold the "ON/OFF/STANDBY" button until the UPS powers back on. 
  2. Check Tripp-Lite UPS status lights on the front panel of the unit.
  3. The battery light is frequently amber colored and will change to green when battery is fully charged (24-48 hours).
  4. If the voltage light (circled in red, below) is not on, hold the power button for several seconds until the unit powers on.
  5. Verify your system boots.

Step 1 - Shutting Down The Computer

  1. Refer to LaundryCard: Proper Reboot and Shutdown Procedures. Shutdown the computer in the X-Changer that requires the replacement hardware according the the instructions contained therein.

Step 2 - Shutting Down The Tripp-Lite UPS

  1. Locate the Tripp-Lite UPS (highlighted in red, alternate configurations shown side by side).
    1. Some X-Changer cabinets (shown on left, below) contain multiple Tripp-Lite devices, but will only contain one Tripp-Lite UPS (also known as a battery backup).

  2. Locate the power button on the front of the Tripp-Lite UPS.
    1. If the status lights above the power button are lit green, hold down the power button (highlighted in red) until the unit powers off.
  3. Disconnect the Tripp-Lite UPS power cable from the wall outlet.

Step 3 - Removing The Existing Battery

  1. Locate and remove the four screws (set aside for later) on the Tripp-Lite UPS front panel (circled in red, below).
  2. Gently lift the panel away and set aside.
  3. Locate the existing battery and disconnect the battery harness from the Tripp-Lite UPS (shown disconnected, below).

Step 4 - Installing The Replacement Battery

  1. Slide the replacement battery into the battery slot.
  2. Carefully reconnect the replacement battery harness to the Tripp-Lite UPS.
  3. Re-attach the front panel.

Step 5 - Powering On The Tripp-Lite UPS

  1. Reconnect the Tripp-Lite UPS power cable to the wall outlet.
  2. If the status lights on the front panel are not lit green, hold the power button until the unit powers on.
    1. Battery light may remain amber colored until battery achieves full charge (24-48 hours). 

How To Perform The Self-Test Without Using The Tripp-Lite Software

“MUTE/TEST” Button
  1. Make sure the Tripp-Lite UPS is plugged in and turned ON. 
  2. Locate the "Mute/Test" button on the Tripp-Lite UPS device.  CAUTION! Do not unplug the UPS to test its batteries. This will remove safe electrical grounding and may introduce a damaging surge into network connections.  Note:  Connected equipment may be left on during a self-test. Your UPS, however, will not perform a self-test if the UPS is not turned on (see “ON/OFF/STANDBY” Button description). 
  3. Press and hold the MUTE/TEST button for two seconds.  Continue holding the button until the alarm beeps several times and the UPS performs a self test. See “Results of a Self-Test” below.
  4. Results of a Self-Test: The test will last approximately 10 seconds as the UPS switches to battery to test its load capacity and battery charge. 
    1. The “POWER” LED will be flashing
    2. “OUTPUT LOAD LEVEL” and “BATTERY CHARGE” LEDs will be lit 
    3. UPS alarm will sound.
  5. If the “OUTPUT LOAD LEVEL” LED remains lit red and the alarm continues to sound after the test, the UPS system's outlets are overloaded. To clear the overload, unplug some of your equipment and run the self-test repeatedly until the “OUTPUT LOAD LEVEL” LED is no longer lit red and the alarm is no longer sounding. CAUTION! Any overload that is not corrected by the user immediately following a self-test may cause the UPS to shut down and cease supplying output power in the event of a blackout or severe brownout.
  6. If the “BATTERY WARNING” LED remains lit and the alarm continues to sound after the test, the UPS batteries need to be recharged or replaced. Allow the UPS to recharge continuously for 12 hours, and repeat the self-test. If the LED remains lit, contact Tripp-Lite for service. If your UPS requires battery replacement, visit www.tripplite.com/support/battery/index.cfm to locate the specific Tripp-Lite replacement battery for your UPS.
  7. The alarm will beep once briefly after the indicated interval has passed.

Max Load/Output Load Level

“OUTPUT LOAD LEVEL” LED

The Tripp-Lite battery has a multicolored LED which indicates the approximate electrical load of equipment connected to the UPS's AC outlets.  

  • Green indicates light electrical load
  • Yellow indicates medium electrical load
  • Red indicates an overload

When this LED is RED and illuminates continuously or flashing, clear the overload immediately by unplugging some of your equipment from the outlets until the LED changes from red to yellow (or green) and the alarm is no longer sounding. 

CAUTION! Any overload that is not corrected by the user immediately may cause the UPS to shut down and cease supplying output power in the event of a blackout or brownout.

Basic Operation

“ON/OFF/STANDBY” Button
  1. To turn the UPS ON:
    1. With the UPS plugged into a live AC wall outlet*, press and hold the “ON/OFF/STANDBY” button for one second.
    2. Release the button. If utility power is absent, it’s possible to “cold-start” the UPS (i.e.: turn it ON and supply power for a limited time from its batteries***) by pressing and holding the “ON/OFF/STANDBY” button for one second.**
  2. To turn the UPS OFF:
    1. With the UPS ON and receiving utility power, press and hold the “ON/OFF/STANDBY” button for one second.**
    2. Then unplug the UPS from the wall outlet. The UPS will be completely OFF.
  • *After plugging the UPS into a live AC outlet, the UPS (in ”Standby” mode) will automatically charge its batteries, but will not supply power to its outlets until it is turned ON. 
  • **The alarm will beep once briefly after the indicated interval has passed. ***If fully charged.

To Silence (or “Mute”) UPS Alarms: briefly press and release the MUTE/TEST button.*

Indicator Lights

There are several indicator lights on the Tripp-Lite UPS device that will illuminate to indicate different activities occurring.  See the below chart for description.

“POWER” LED
  • This green LED lights continuously when the UPS is ON and supplying connected equipment with AC power from a utility source.
  • The LED flashes and an alarm sounds (4 short beeps followed by a pause) to indicate the UPS is operating from its internal batteries during a blackout or severe brownout.
  • If the blackout or severe brownout is prolonged, save files and shut down connected equipment since internal battery power will eventually be depleted. See “BATTERY CHARGE” LED description below.

“VOLTAGE CORRECTION” LED
  • This green LED lights continuously whenever the UPS is automatically correcting high or low AC voltage on the utility line without the assistance of battery power.
  • The UPS will also emit a slight clicking noise. These are normal, automatic operations of the UPS and no user action is required.

“OUTPUT LOAD LEVEL” LED
  • This multicolored LED indicates the approximate electrical load of equipment connected to the UPS AC outlets.
  • It will turn from green (light load) to yellow (medium load) to red (overload).
  • If the LED is red (either illuminated continuously or flashing), clear the overload immediately by unplugging some equipment from the outlets until the LED changes from red to yellow (or green).
  • CAUTION! Any overload that is not corrected by the user immediately may cause the UPS to shut down and cease supplying output power in the event of a blackout or brownout.

“BATTERY CHARGE” LED
  • When the UPS is operating from utility power, this LED indicates the approximate charge state of the UPS system’s internal batteries.
    • Red indicates the batteries are beginning to charge
    • Yellow indicates the batteries are roughly midway through charging
    • Green indicates the batteries are fully charged.
  • When the UPS is operating from battery power during a blackout or severe brownout, this LED indicates the approximate amount of energy (ultimately affecting runtime) which the UPS batteries will provide.
    • Red indicates a low level of energy
    • Yellow indicates a medium level of energy
    • Green indicates a high level of energy.
  • Since the runtime performance of all UPS batteries will gradually deplete over time, it is recommended that a self-test be performed periodically (see MUTE/TEST Button description) to determine the energy level of the UPS batteries BEFORE a blackout or severe brownout occurs.
  • During a prolonged blackout or severe brownout, save files and shut down connected equipment since battery power will eventually be depleted.
  • When the LED turns red and an alarm sounds continuously, it indicates the UPS batteries are nearly out of power and UPS shut down is imminent.

“BATTERY WARNING” LED
  • This LED lights red and an alarm sounds intermittently after a self-test is initiated (See How to Perform the Self Test instructions above) to indicate the UPS batteries need to be recharged or replaced. Allow the UPS to recharge continuously for 12 hours, and repeat the self-test. If the LED continues to light, contact Tripp-Lite for service. If the UPS requires battery replacement, visit www.tripplite.com to locate the specific Tripp-Lite replacement battery for the UPS.
