How-to create a VPN Connection in Windows 11



Overview

This guide is meant to walk the end-user through creating a VPN connection in Windows 11. 

Step-by-step guide

Create the connection

  1. Right-click the Start button.





  2. Click Settings.





  3. On the left-hand side of Settings, select Network & Internet.





  4. Once in the Network & Internet settings window, click VPN.





  5. At the top of the page where you can see 'VPN Connections', click Add VPN towards the right-hand side.





  6. On the Add a VPN connection dialog box, populate the fields as follows:

    1. VPN Provider: Windows (built-in)

    2. Connection Name: <give the connection a friendly name you will understand>

    3. Server name or address: <enter the ip address or dns name (i.e., vpn.somesite.com)>

    4. VPN Type:  <choose the appropriate type; generally either "Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)" or "L2TP/IPsec with pre-shared key".

      1. If using L2TP, the Pre-shared key is: NoMoreCoins2Collect

    5. Type of sign-in info: Username and password

    6. User name (optional): <your username>

    7. Password (optional): <your password>

    8. Remember my sign-in info: 

    9. Press the Save button.







How to connect

  1. Once the connection has been created, click the Network icon in the System Tray (bottom-right area of the screen).

    1. NOTE: The icon will vary depending on whether your computer is connected via a cable or wireless.

  2. A shield icon will be present with VPN below it. Click the shield icon.

  3. Click on the desired connection and then click Connect.

  4. Wait a moment and the VPN connection should work.

    1. If you experience any issues when attempting to connect, re-verify your VPN connection settings from Step 6.
